Hello, Analy Community—
Early this morning, I was greeted on my way into the main office by a parent who wanted to report on the good experience her student is having at school and, in particular, on the cheerleading team. Moments later, a student shared that she had aced her bio test, and currently has 102% in the class. A call came in from a vendor to talk about revising an agreement.
I share all of this, not because it is unusual—but rather because it is so…normal. As I write this on November 6th, the day after the election, things feel pretty much as they generally do here at Analy.
As you know from earlier Parent Square messages, we had anticipated—regardless of the election outcome—that there would be feelings of both sorrow and celebration on campus today, and that some of us, at least, might need special care and consolation. To be sure, the snacks are being happily eaten, and the therapy dogs are getting plenty of pats. But the mood among students on campus today feels much as it generally does: somewhat relaxed, often empathetic, mostly sweet.
There are undoubtedly questions and uncertainties—as is always the case when there are changes. During breaks, students are collecting in groups and connecting with adults they trust. In this way, they remind me of Margaret Wheatley’s 2003 piece “When Change is out of Our Control.” Wheatley says:
"It is possible to prepare for the future without knowing what it will be. The primary way to prepare for the unknown is to attend to the quality of our relationships, to how well we know and trust one another.”
In this moment, students at Analy seem to me to be intuitively preparing for the future by attending to their relationships—and that makes me hopeful, whatever the future may bring.
