Tuesday, September 19, was a big day for Analy High School with the debut of our newly established girls’ Flag Football Team. Analy, with a strong roster of 42 players, squared up to play seven-on-seven against Rio Lindo Adventist Academy from Healdsburg, a boarding school with an established flag football team since the 1990s. Analy is among four other schools fielding teams this year.
“All four teams are playing as freelance nonleague programs this fall. The North Bay League will likely bring the sport into the fold next year once there’s a clearer picture of the number of programs. The North Coast Section is also not holding championships for the sport this year for similar reasons,” states Gus Morris, a Press Democrat writer who covered Analy’s first game against Rio Lindo Adventist Academy on Tuesday.
Although the Tigers fell to Rio Lindo 13-38, the spirit in the stadium and the exhilaration of our newly formed team were unmatched. “Just making history with these girls is amazing,” Abby Morales, Analy’s head coach, said. “No matter win or lose, we came out and did the thing.” Abby is a bilingual paraeducator for Analy and an alumnus who wanted to play flag football as a student but wasn’t afforded the opportunity. Now, as head coach, Abby has inspired our students, leading them to explore this new sport now offered to them.
